'Sup Blood.

I’m always surprised by the changing nature of the questions on the blood donation form. Each time one gives blood there is a short form one must fill out. A few of the most recent gems below;

28. In the last 12 months have you been in juvenile detention, lockup, jail or prison for more than 72 hours?

72 hours in a jail is enough to put someone at risk for blood borne pathogens? I guess we all know something is wrong with the prison system but wow.

30. From 1980 through 1996 did you spend time that adds up to three months in the UK?
32. From 1980 to the present did you spend time that adds up to five years in Europe?
33. From 1980 to the present did you receive a blood transfusion in the UK?

I suspect the UK and Europe questions have to do with Mad Cow disease .

47. Have you ever had sexual contact with anyone who was born in or lived in Africa?
48. Have you ever been to Africa?

Those two were a surprise because I don’t recall seeing them on a previous questionnaire. Just visiting the continent is enough to raise a flag? Africa is worse for your health than Jail?

55. Have you ever been pregnant? If yes how many times?

This one was also a surprise. I have no idea why it would matter if you had ever been pregnant, nor the amount of children you’ve had.

Incidentally I am A- as is 6% of the US population.

The Surrealist For Realist

Pop vs Soda

Some how growing up I managed to pick up the habit of calling Soda, 'Coke'. As in;

"Would you like a Coke?"
"Yes"
"What Kind"

Mind you this was back when there was only one kind of Coke.

I have come to learn that what one calls bubbly sugar water is heavily influenced by where you grew up as evidenced by this interactive map

The San Francisco municipal elections are tonight, a night of excitement and community. One of the measures was Proposition G which asked, "Shall the City establish a Golden Gate Park Stables Matching Fund to be used for the renovation, repair, and maintenance of the Golden Gate Park stables and provide up to $750,000 in matching City revenues toward this Fund?" The idea being, for each $3 donated by individuals or corporations the City would donate $1.

Now I can see how someone might be for or against such a measure (horses are purdy vs. can't we use this money to incarcerate someone?) but the line in the "Opponents Argument Against Proposition G" that caught my eye was this one:

SEND THE HORSE STABLE TO THE GLUE FACTORY.

With rhetoric like that, how can you NOT vote against the measure?

Human Transport Options

My friend Trevor often comments of how much space cars take up, not only due to their bulk but also due to the amount of space you need to dedicate to around a car as it moves (especially in front as a car increases in speed).

I found the picture below (click on it for a large version) which is some indication of the space even non-moving cars take up in comparison to other transport options.
